Sorry if this has been discussed before (I admit it---I got lazy and blew off search!).but I'm totally confused over a Garmin map update. I've had City Navigator v8 for the past few years. Today, when I went to Garmin's site to unlock my maps (after reformatting/reinstalling them on my laptop) there was a notice saying I could download my 'Onetime' map update to City Navigator NT 2011. Not wanting to lose my 'Onetime' update, I said sure, go ahead, not realizing it was gonna take all day! But my confusion comes from an email that said the download would update the maps on my device.
I'm confused because this update is called City Navigator NT 2011.and it's saying it'll be installed on my device. Dwg Xls Converter there. but I've never had any City Navigator maps preinstalled on my device---just the ultra-basic Garmin base map that came on the device. (And there is no way my Oregon 450 could possibly hold ALL of the City Navigator maps at once!) If it's updating the maps on my laptop, it's not acting like it, because it keeps telling me not to unplug my device. Has anyone else been through this update? What the heck is going on? Thanks, Scott. I think the updater is confused. What you downloaded is intended to update the pre-installed maps on a device such as the Nuvi.
Our mapping FAQ might help: I know that you can update City Navigator if it was purchased on DVD, but I don't think it is compatible with the nuMap free update that you downloaded. Also, is your old version - City Navigator v8 - the NT version (are the letters NT in the name somewhere)? If not, then you definitely cannot update that old version. So I'm pretty sure you were offered an update that doesn't apply to you.
You would probably need to contact Garmin support to find out for sure. Mpls Fundamentals Pdf on this page. I'm not sure what happened, but you appear to be wrong Boyd! (And I don't know why!) I spent a few hours downloading what was obviously a huge pile of map data.and when it was all done (my Oregon 450 was connected to my laptop throughout the entire process) a message appeared saying 'Your maps are now up to date!' When I opened MapSource, it shows that I now have the unlocked City Navigator NT 2011 maps. I'm still thoroughly confused, and will give Garmin a call tomorrow to ask them what just happened?
It appears as though I just got a totally free upgrade from City Navigator 8 to City Navigator NT 2011.assuming those are the same product? (Just different versions?) Scott. Well that's pretty cool. I wouldn't call Garmin myself. They may try to take it away. It should not have updated the non-NT version of City Navigator.
But maybe you found a cool backdoor way to get City Navigator NT for free? The big question would be whether it will work on your Oregon. The maps don't need to be unlocked to work on your computer, but they do on the GPS.
It could be problem for somebody with an old GPS that can't use the NT version of City Navigator, because that new map wouldn't work for them. Well.I just selected and sent some maps (using City Navigator NT 2011) from MapSource to my Oregon 450.and they seem to be going onto the Oregon just fine. As for a 'backdoor' way to get the City Navigator NT 2011 maps for free, I have no idea? I just logged into 'My Garmin' and there it was. But now I'm a bit suspicious.it could well be my imagination.but when I was selecting maps to send to my Oregon, it appeared as though the selection polygons were bigger (e.g. All of West Virginia was a single polygon).and it seemed like the total file size of the maps I sent to the Oregon was smaller than what I'm used to.which makes me wonder if somehow City Navigator NT 2011 is a stripped-down data set from my original City Navigator v8?
