Biffy Clyro were formed in 1995 in by vocalist and guitarist, bassist and drummer. They released their debut EP in 2000 through and later signed with.

The band's debut full-length album was released in March 2002, reaching number 25 on the and number 78 on the. Followed in 2003, with the album's single ' the band's first to reach the top ten of the. The band's third and final album with Beggars Banquet,, was released the following year. The singles ', ' and ' all reached the top ten in Scotland, as well as the top 30 on the. After a number of years touring, Biffy Clyro returned in 2007 with on, which topped the Scottish Albums Chart and reached number two in the UK. The album was certified platinum in the UK and spawned three UK top-20 singles: ', ' and '. After the release of lead single ' in 2008 and second single ' in 2009, both of which topped the Scottish Singles Chart, the band released their fifth album in 2009.

The album reached number four in Scotland, number three in the UK, and has since been certified double platinum in the UK. An additional four singles from Only Revolutions reached the Scottish top 20.
